Official Talmen Regulations

First Edition – 2026, adopted 22 April 2026 by the International Talmen Federation (TALFED).

1. The Board & Scoring Squares

The board consists of an 8×8 grid with 64 white squares. Each back rank contains 3 blue squares (1 point) and 1 red square (2 points). The first player to accumulate 3 points wins immediately.

2. Piece Movement & Unprotected Capture

  • Talmen Stone: Moves 1 step forward, then optionally 1 step left/right into empty squares. Captures only the piece directly in front if the square behind is empty (unprotected).
  • Corner Guardian: Moves 1 step in any of 8 directions. Captures any adjacent unprotected enemy piece.
  • Talmen Knight: Moves 1 or 2 steps in 8 directions and can jump over pieces.
  • Talmen Commander: Slides up to 2 steps in 8 directions (cannot jump). Victory is achieved by capturing enemy Commander or occupying opponent's red square.

3. Freezing & Inactive Zones

A Stone that reaches a scoring square becomes permanently frozen. A Knight is frozen but can unfreeze by moving off the square, forfeiting the point earned if it does not capture or threaten the opponent Commander. Frozen pieces confer no protection to adjacent pieces.
